PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lake City buries Sandpoint with fast start

| December 13, 2023 1:20 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — With size comes results.

On Tuesday, Lake City was happy with the result.

Senior Avery Waddington, who signed with Montana last month, scored six of the game’s first 13 points — all by the Timberwolves — in a 71-39 win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs in a nonleague game on Tuesday at Lake City High.

“We just knew how good they were and knew we had to come out and play hard on both ends of the floor,” said Lake City coach David Pratt of Sandpoint, last year’s state 4A champions. After seeing how well they played against Coeur d’Alene, our girls got up for the game knowing that they’re a good team.”

Lake City hit nine 3-pointers, compared to two by Sandpoint.

Lake City limited Aliya Strock, the state 4A Player of the Year last year, to 11 points for Sandpoint.

“We’ve got some length and speed that does us well on defense,” Pratt said. “We really took care of the glass tonight. When the ball went up, we were able to get a boatload of rebounds.”

Senior Sophia Zufelt scored 12 points, senior Kamryn Pickford 11 and junior Sadie Zimmerman 10 for Lake City (8-1), which travels to Lakeland in an Inland Empire League game on Thursday.
