RATHDRUM — After a slow start, Lakeland stepped on the gas in the second half to get a big Inland Empire League win.

Junior Landree Simon scored 15 of her game-high 24 points in the second half for the Hawks in the win over the Lewiston Bengals at Hawk Court on Friday.

“Lewiston came out very aggressive and found some sparks,” Lakeland coach Tyrel Derrick said. “In the second half, we were able to find some energy defensively and create transition opportunities, which was needed after a slow start to the game.”

Payton Sterling scored 12 points for Lakeland (3-2, 1-1 IEL), which hosts Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday.

Addy McKarcher scored 16 points for Lewiston (3-4, 1-3).

Banks finished with 26 points for Sandpoint (5-0, 2-0 IEL), the defending 4A state champions, who beat reigning 5A champ Coeur d’Alene at home on Tuesday.

“That shot got them the momentum,” said Post Falls coach Brian Hall, who focused his defense on another Bulldog standout, Aliya Strock, holding her to four points in the first half and 12 overall. “That was our goal, to hold her down, and then Banks had a great game.”

Brooklynn Brennan led Post Falls (3-7, 1-1) with 20 points.

“Post Falls has some great players who played really hard; we had trouble getting in sync,” Sandpoint coach Will Love said. “I’m excited to see how we responded tonight to a tough challenge. It was a good learning experience against another 5A opponent and we will look to continue that … we will have to get to work with Lake City coming up.”

Senior Katie Berg, in her first action of the season after suffering a shoulder injury during the jamboree, tallied seven points and five rebounds for Post Falls.

“Nice to have Katie Berg back on the floor,” Hall said. “We battled hard for three quarters; we had plenty of opportunities. Sandpoint’s a really good ball club; they’re defending 4A champs, and I could see them doing it again.”

Post Falls plays host to Lewiston on Monday.

RATHDRUM — Junior Gabe Harris scored a game-high 23 points, hitting 11 of 14 from the free-throw line, as the Hawks pushed past the Bengals in a nonleague game at Hawk Court.

“He’s kind of our glue guy and gets to the rim really well,” said Lakeland coach Tony Hanna of Harris. “Between him and Ben Ryan, they were just solid inside for us. They got a lot of rebounds and shot well from the line. And we needed Gabe to step up tonight.”

Lakeland guards Mason Hensley and Toby Tebbe each suffered ankle injuries during the second half, and missed the rest of the game. Kenton Ferguson, another Lakeland guard, was limited due to an ankle injury suffered at practice earlier this week.

“It was just a gutsy performance,” Hanna said. “Lewiston came out and their pressure really got to us in the first half and they were shooting the ball well. I challenged our guys to get out and challenge their shooters, and we did a much better job in the second half.”
