Dorothy B. Porter, 95
Dorothy was born in 1927 in Seattle, Wash., to parents Viola and Victor Olson. In an unsettled world torn by war and depression, Dorothy grew to be a kind and gentle young lady. She enjoyed riding and caring for her horse, music and singing, and showed an early artistic talent. When she chose a career, she honed her artistic abilities in commercial art and advertising.
Dorothy had one child in her first marriage, her son Robert. She later remarried, to Walter Porter, and they were together 66 years. The Porter's lived in several western locations due to Walter's career in the U.S. Forest Service, including Lake Oswego, Ore.; Boise, Idaho; Twin Falls, Idaho; Reno, Nevada; McCall, Idaho; Ellensburg, Wash., and Desert Aire, Wash.
In each of these locations, Dorothy continued to work as a commercial artist. She worked for a business originally known as C.C. Anderson, later to become the Bon Marche, and the Gray Reid Department store as an advertising manager. Watercolor and acrylic painting became a way to express her artistic talent while living in the scenic Northwest. During her time in Ellensburg, she also designed a stained glass window that was installed in the local hospital.
Dorothy also loved golf, and in her quiet way was fairly competitive, winning numerous trophies over the years. She and Walter also enjoyed sports car competitions and were members of several different car clubs.
In later years, the Porters traveled the U.S., enjoying life on the road in their motor home. They eventually retired to North Idaho to be near family.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Robert (Pamela) Tate of Rathdrum, Idaho; brother Dan (Denise) Olson of Indio, Calif., and stepson Stephen Porter.
The family appreciates the care provided by Pacifica Courtyard Assisted Living in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Crest Home Health of Coeur d'Alene and Hospice of North Idaho.
A memorial will be planned at a later date. May she rest in eternal peace.
Bell Tower Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
