POST FALLS — The Post Falls Trojans had to overcome adversity — twice — in a 53-49 nonleague victory over the University Titans of Spokane Valley on Thursday night at The Arena.

Adversity No. 1 took place in the first half, when Post Falls (4-2) fell behind 15-4 after one quarter.

Adversity No. 2 happened in the fourth quarter, when University (0-3) started the quarter on a 12-0 run, and led by as much as four points before the Trojans responded, and Alex Shields fed Connor Carver on a high-low play for a layup to give Post Falls the lead for good with 3 minutes left.

“We really didn’t panic, which was a big step for this team,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “In past years we would have made it worse. This team showed some character in staying with it.”

Shields finished with 12 points and seven rebounds for Post Falls. Carver had 12 points and six boards, Tyras Blake 12 points and six boards. Neil McCarthy had 10 points, including two big 3-pointers in the third quarter, and four assists, and Trenton McLean had three steals.

Shane Skidmore, a 6-8 senior, scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter for University.

AJ Wolfe hit two 3s in the first quarter for the Titans, who hit two more treys in the second half, then got nada from deep after that.

“All we talked about after the first quarter,” McLean said, “we weren’t closing out on shooters, and were a little overzealous with our help. We talked about staying true to our defensive principles.”

Post Falls was bothered by U-Hi’s full-court pressure in the first quarter, then adjusted.

“In the second quarter, Trenton did a really good job of facilitating, after we broke that initial pressure,” Mike McLean said of his son.

Post Falls plays host to Ferris on Saturday.
