George Robert Houchin, 77

George Robert Houchin, 77, of Wallace, Idaho, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, Dec. 4, 2023, at The Schneidmiller Hospice House in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, after a courageous battle with cancer. George was born Aug. 6, 1946, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, a son of the late Claude Houchin and Margaret (Butler) Houchin-Lindley.

George graduated from Wallace High School in 1965 and went on to build a career in mining, eventually retiring from the Lucky Friday Mine in Mullan, Idaho, in 2015. George also belonged to the Shoshone County Search and Rescue Team for many years. 

George loved the outdoors, enjoying competitive trap and skeet shooting, hunting, fishing, exploring mountain roads and working endlessly on his river property. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends, who will all miss him immensely. 

In addition to his parents, George is preceded in death by his step-father, Walt Lindley; and three siblings, Gary Lindley, Claudia Houchin and Steve Houchin. 

Survivors include the mother of his four children, Dorothy Houchin of Wallace, Idaho; his children, George (Tina) Houchin of Osburn, Idaho, Kari (Dale) Centers of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Norm (LaTricia) Houchin of Billings, Mont., and Susan Houchin-McKinnon of Wallace, Idaho; George’s special friend, Joyce Lavergne of Wallace, Idaho; 10 grandchildren, Jeffrey Chambers, Kelsi and Cassidy Houchin, Jenny Chapman, Brandon Centers, Abbie and Gavin Houchin, Morgan Houchin and Cameron and Austin McKinnon; six great-grandchildren, Romy and Arye Chambers, Kylee and MacKenzie Brotzman and Jaxon and Blakely Centers; four siblings, Bob (Adele) Houchin of Las Vegas, Nev., Mark (Patti) Houchin of Wallace, Idaho, John (Jackie) Houchin of Meridian, Idaho, and Dave (Becky) Lindley of Spokane, Wash. 

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Shoshone Funeral Services, 106 S. Main St., Kellogg, Idaho, where a small reception will follow.  

A celebration of George’s life will be held sometime in the spring of 2024.
