PREP BASKETBALL: Viking girls get past Rocky Mountain; visit Sandpoint on Tuesday

| December 3, 2023 1:15 AM

• GIRLS

COEUR d’ALENE — Leading 44-30 at halftime, Coeur d’Alene — for whatever reason — lost a bit of its momentum on offense in the second half.

However, the Vikings found it when it mattered most.

Sophomore Karisa Wallis and senior Maddie Mitchell hit late 3-pointers for the Vikings, who held off the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies 58-54 at Viking Court on Saturday in a rematch of February’s state 5A championship game, won by the Vikings.

“We had a good first half, and then just struggled in the third quarter,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons said. “The game got slowed down and didn’t really go in our favor. Neither team could get a flow going and we had to go to some kids that haven’t played much in their roles. But it was a great game for our girls to learn from.”

Senior Teagan Colvin, who has signed with UNLV, scored 23 points for Coeur d’Alene (5-1), which plays at Sandpoint, winners of last year’s state 4A title, on Tuesday.

“I’m proud of the girls for figuring out a way to win when we weren’t playing at our best,” Symons said. “It was a good experience for our younger kids.”

Senior Cianna Legaspi scored 13 points for Rocky Mountain (4-2).

COEUR d’ALENE — After a sluggish second half on Friday, the Timberwolves shook that off in a hurry against the Warriors.

Senior Avery Waddington scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the first quarter and the Timberwolves hit nine 3-pointers en route to a nonleague win.

“We came out still disappointed from Friday’s game, and had a big first quarter,” said Lake City coach David Pratt, whose team led 30-4 after the first quarter. We didn’t shoot it well (Friday), but we were almost 80% today in that first quarter. The girls just couldn’t miss.”

Senior KaLiah Frazey scored 15 points, senior Sophia Zufelt nine points for Lake City (6-1), which plays at Moscow on Tuesday.

Freshman Derrick Chamberlain who scored 13, had big second half performances which helped the Bulldogs turn a three-point halftime lead into a 20-point victory.

“I wouldn’t call it a sluggish start, but our wheels weren’t spinning in the first half,” Childs said. “In the second half we were able to get the ball inside to Emerick (Jones) and Derrick (Chamberlain) which helped to open up our other guys.”
