COEUR d’ALENE — Junior Sadie Zimmerman hit three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points as the Lake City Timberwolves downed the Eagle Mustangs 69-53 in nonleague play Thursday night.

Senior Sophia Zufelt hit three 3s and added 16 points, and senior Avery Waddington also tallied 16 points for Lake City (5-0).

“We played really hard; very impressed with our resilience,” said Lake City coach David Pratt, whose team hit 10 3s. “We scored the ball well, hit some really good shots.”

The Timberwolves led by four points at halftime, then pulled away in the second half.

“We did a nice job of attacking the paint and kicking out for shots,” Pratt said. “We did a nice job of keeping them out of their comfort zone.”

Paige Cofer, a 6-foot guard, first-team all-Idaho last year and a signee with Utah Tech of St. George, Utah, led all scorers with 20 points for Eagle (2-3). Lake City held her without a field goal in the second half, when she hit seven of her nine made free throws on the night.

“We did everything we could to throw her down,” Pratt said. “She took some tough shots, but was able to draw fouls.”

Lake City plays host to Rocky Mountain of Meridian, last year’s state 5A runners-up, tonight at 7.

POST FALLS — Once the shots were going in early, for whatever reason, the Trojans got into a hole they couldn’t dig out of against the state 5A runner-up Grizzlies of Meridian.

Senior Letti Asper scored 16 points for the Trojans, who fell to the Grizzlies at The Arena in the first of three straight home games against teams from District III (Boise).

“Starting the game, I don’t think anyone wants to be the first one to miss,” Post Falls coach Brian Hall said. “If they miss a few, they start thinking maybe they shouldn’t be shooting the ball, get that in their heads and stop shooting. With the offense we’re trying to run, we need to score more than 47 points.”

Senior Cianna Legaspi scored 21 of her game-high 23 points in the first three quarters for Rocky Mountain (3-1), which faces Lake City tonight.

Senior Brooklynn Brennan had nine points, seven assists and three steals and junior Myckenzee Mitley scored 11 points for Post Falls (1-5), which hosts Meridian tonight.

“We had a really good first quarter, with both teams getting up and down the court,” said St. Maries coach Gary Krumheuer, whose team trailed 15-12 after the first. “We didn’t get any shots in the second quarter and got in a hurry with some turnovers and it kind of got away from us. We played a lot better in the second half.”

Senior Sami Sindt had six points and seven rebounds, junior Brenna Elliott eight points for St. Maries (1-4), which hosts Kendrick on Saturday.

Dericka Morgan scored 13 points for Troy (2-0).

NAMPA — Senior Neil McCarthy, playing against the team his grandfather, Neil, coached to a pair of state titles, scored all 11 of his points in the fourth quarter as the Trojans beat the Knights in the first round of the Capital Classic at Northwest Nazarene University.

McCarthy scored eight of those points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers, for Post Falls (2-0). He hit three of the Trojans’ four 3s on the night, and had five rebounds.

“He showed great composure and didn’t force it,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “His father Rob was a standout player there, and his uncles played there as well. Neil did a good job with all those expectations and family there.”

Alex Shields had 13 points and six rebounds for Post Falls, and earned praise from McLean for his senior leadership. Sophomore Connor Carver added 10 points for the Trojans, who hit 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch to seal it.

“Isaac McKeown off the bench just made a bunch of winning plays, getting tough rebounds, made some good passes in traffic,” McLean said. “It was probably Trenton’s best varsity game. He was tasked to be a menace on the guards of BK, and he did a good job wearing down those guards.”

Trenton McLean had four steals, Tyras Blake two blocks for Post Falls.

Owen Kane and Mason Suboh-Meuret each scored 14 points for Bishop Kelly (1-1).

“BK is so well coached, they run that extended 2-3 zone, and they’re really good at manipulating you into taking quick shots,” McLean said. “We were really good at being composed and getting the shots that we want.”

Post Falls will play Baker of Baker City, Ore., tonight at 7 MST in the semifinals. Baker defeated Borah of Boise.

In the other first-round games, Capital beat Blackfoot and Ridgevue defeated Lewiston.

Joey Willliams scored nine points for Moscow (1-1).

“We put all our focus on shutting down (Ian) Hillman (who scored 23 points in the Bears’ opener against Clarkston on Tuesday), and did a good job of containing him,” Timberlake coach Mike LaFountaine said. “But we didn’t close out well at the 3-point line and they just couldn’t miss.”

Moscow finished the game 10 of 19 from the 3-point line.

Vaughn Higgins scored nine points for Timberlake, which plays at North Central tonight.

“I liked how our kids fought tonight,” LaFountaine said. “We’ve got a lot to learn and defensively, we’ve got to learn to close out and rotate a little better.”
