POWELL, Wyo. — Deniece Ryan, a sophomore guard from Albuquerque, had 24 points and three steals for the Cardinals in a loss to the Trappers.

NIC (4-6), which led 47-41 after three quarters, was outscored 34-19 in the fourth quarter by the Trappers (7-3).

“The fourth quarter just did us in,” said NIC coach Nathan Covill, who was down to nine players after losing reserve Tayler Adams to a broken foot last week. “We just couldn’t get stops and had a moment where we couldn’t score. Right now, we’ve got to be better defensively and find ourselves. I’ve been telling the girls that we’ve got to roll through the mud to find ourselves. Right now, we’re dirty and sloppy.”

Carolina Ruiz scored 21 points for Northwest, which hosts NIC again on Saturday.

Maddie Williamson, a freshman from Malta, Mont., had 18 points, six steals and five rebounds and sophomore Addie Kiefer from Lakeland High had 14 points and four rebounds for NIC, which faces the Carroll JV today in Powell, Wyo.

“Maddie’s a heck of a competitor,” Covill said. “We know she’s going to work hard and going to be engaged every day. She’s one of those kids that I can count on to give me her all each day.”
