PREP VOLLEYBALL: Coeur d'Alene triumphs at Lewiston tourney

LEWISTON — Coeur d’Alene won all five matches on Saturday, including a 27-25, 25-12 victory over 1A Division I power Troy in the championship match of the Judy Fong Memorial Tournament at Lewiston High.

In pool play, Coeur d’Alene swept Kendrick 28-27, 25-11, Kellogg 25-14, 25-9 and Moscow 25-16, 25-10.

In the semifinals, the Vikings bounced back from a first-set loss to defeat Sandpoint 16-25, 25-9, 15-7.

“We’re playing with a lot of team chemistry,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “When things started to get a little crazy, the kids did a good job of bouncing back. This team is doing a really good job of making adjustments to the opponents.”

Paisley Goings had 27 kills and eight aces on the day for Coeur d’Alene (6-0). Gia Janke added 26 kills and eight aces, Bailey Jaworski 55 assists and 23 digs, Olivia Naccarato six blocks, Elizabeth Hardy 33 assists, Gracie Legg 39 digs.

Sandpoint (4-2) finished 3-2 in the tournament.

In pool play, Sandpoint lost to Troy 25-21, 20-25, 15-13, then beat Pendleton 20-25, 25-18, 15-6 and Orofino 25-6, 25-16 later in the day.

In the gold bracket, the Bulldogs defeated Kendrick in the quarterfinals 25-16, 28-26 before falling to Coeur d’Alene in the semifinals.

“We seemed a little out of sorts today but we’re learning every single match,” first-year Sandpoint coach and former Bulldog star Piper Wahlin said. “The mental side of our game has already grown immensely and is showing on and off the court.”

Haley Swaim had 94 assists and 10 aces on the day for the Bulldogs. Aubree Lane added 40 kills and 14 aces, Vivian Platte 36 kills, Mackenzie Eden six blocks, Hazel Pierce five blocks.

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Lakeland on Tuesday.

Sandpoint returns to Lewiston on Tuesday to face the Bengals.

Post Falls at

Kuna Klassic

KUNA — The Trojans won their first seven matches at the two-day Kuna Klassic before falling to Rocky Mountain of Meridian 24-26, 25-15, 15-11 in the semifinals.

Earlier in pool play, Post Falls beat Melba 25-14, 25-21, Nampa Christian 25-20, 25-19 and Rocky Mountain 25-20, 25-17.

In the quarterfinals, Post Falls beat Salmon 25-13, 25-17.

Kylie Munday had 42 kills, 51 assists and 11 blocks on the day for Post Falls (9-1). Trinity Burne had 24 kills, Lucy Carr 50 assists, Lexi Norisada 45 digs, Danielle Codd 25 digs, Kaela Gump 20 blocks, Jenna Sarff 12 blocks, Vanessa Kison three aces.

“This was a great three days of learning for us as a team, about each other, individual skills and how our team plays,” said Post Falls coach Willow Hanna, whose team opened the season with 10 matches in three days. “We really challenged ourselves physically and mentally. Kylie really worked hard in all areas to help our team. Lexi and Dani worked in the back row on passing and serving to keep our hitters swinging.”

Post Falls returns to action Thursday at Lakeland in its Inland Empire League opener.
