COEUR d’ALENE — Jacob Molina’s goal in the fifth minute of the game stood up as the Lake City Timberwolves edged the Coeur d’Alene Vikings 1-0 in Inland Empire League play Saturday at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“It was a gritty win today,” Lake City coach Kevin Jump said. “CHS came to play and they caught us off-guard with their physical play. We don't have many competitive matches and this was a tough early challenge for both teams. Our defense was stout the entire match. We were trying to create more scoring chances but we either sputtered on the final pass or CHS made a timely interception or tackle. This won't go down as one of the prettiest games played, but we're grateful for the win.”

Lake City (3-0-0, 3-0-0) travels to Post Falls on Tuesday.

Coeur d’Alene (2-1-0, 2-1-0) visits Sandpoint on Thursday.

“I’m happy with how the game was played despite some circumstances,” Sandpoint coach Tanner French said. “The first game of the season is never simple tactically or technically, but the boys seemed to have enjoyed themselves.”

COEUR d’ALENE — The visiting Timberwolves capitalized on an own goal midway through the first half, then added on with goals from Taylor Miller and Kennedy Hartzell later in the half en route to an Inland Empire League win over the Vikings at Viking Field.

“We kind of let down mentally on those goals in the first half,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “I was proud of how we played in the second half. We’ve still got a lot of new players to the team and are trying to figure that out. Once we settled in, we looked good.”

Kylie McCamly scored in the 43rd minute for Coeur d’Alene (2-1-0, 2-1-0 IEL), which hosts Sandpoint on Thursday at the school’s soccer field.

SANDPOINT — The 5A Bengals, who already knocked off Lake City earlier this season, beat the 4A power Bulldogs in nonleague play at War Memorial Field.

At halftime, the Bengals led 1-0, but Sandpoint’s Aliya Strock scored on a pass from Lilliana Brinkmeier within the first two minutes of the second half to tie things up, 1-1. It’s the third consecutive game Strock has recorded a goal.

Lewiston then scored two consecutive goals around the 60th minute mark to make the score 3-1. Sandpoint continued to fight, playing a lot of the last 20 minutes in Bengal territory. Sandpoint’s Mya Vorhies scored late in the contest, but the Bulldogs were unable to score the equalizer.

“We allowed too many through balls, made too many mistakes, and didn’t finish our chances,” Sandpoint coach Conor Baranski said. “We lacked the grit and aggression that got us our win over Lake City. It wasn’t until the last 10 minutes until we really kicked it into high gear today.”

Sandpoint (2-1) will face Moscow at home on Wednesday.
