COEUR d’ALENE — Alyssa Ryckman had 22 kills, Addy Hocking 18 assists and three aces for the Lakeland Hawks in a 25-27, 25-16, 25-16, 25-22 nonleague win over the Lake City Timberwolves in the season opener for both schools on Wednesday.
“It took some time to warm up,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “But once things started to mesh, our girls played really well. They showed grit and persevered through the tough battles. Addy Jo was scrappy and outstanding on defense. Alyssa played great tonight and put the ball down almost with every swing.”
Ella Terzulli had 31 assists, Olivia Zazuetta 28 assists and Ziya Munyer seven blocks for Lakeland, which travels to Lewiston on Friday.
Jess Wilson had 11 kills and three aces, Taylor Winey 27 assists and Ava Johnson eight kills for Lake City, which visits Sandpoint tonight.
“We came out strong and had glimmers of cohesion throughout the night,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “The pieces are there, we just need to put them together more consistently. We started immensely getting a block in front of their big hitters and they capitalized. Lakeland is a powerful team and we have some work to do to be ready for them next time. I’m proud of our fight at the finish of the match. We plan to continue that momentum heading into our Sandpoint match.”
