COEUR d’ALENE — You never forget your first.
The players on the Coeur d’Alene girls soccer team sure won’t.
Coeur d’Alene, behind two second-half goals by senior forward Sally Gatten, erased a 1-0 halftime deficit and beat the Lakeland Hawks 5-1 on Tuesday, the first varsity sporting event held on the new turf at Viking Field.
“It was awesome,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “We couldn’t have dreamed it would turn out better. It was really special to be the first event out there. The girls were really excited and it was special to them to get to do this.”
Natalee Rose scored in the 17th minute — the first goal on the new field — to give Lakeland a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Gatten scored in the 46th and 51st minute to spark the Viking offense.
“She was a key player tonight,” Vredenburg said. “She made the right runs and had two great finishes. Those two goals were what really tipped the scale for sure. It just raised the energy of everyone for sure.”
Gianna Callari had a goal and two assists for Coeur d’Alene, which travels to Lewiston on Thursday.
Lakeland travels to Post Falls on Thursday.
“Lakeland’s a good team,” Vredenburg said. “They played hard and have some good athletes.”

Gabbie Henkle scored in the 65th minute to tie the game at 2-2 for Lake City. Taylor Musser scored the deciding goal moments later for Lewiston.

POST FALLS — Senior Alexa Sheppard scored two goals and assisted on another for the Panthers in a season-opening win over the Vandals at The Fields.
“I’m pleased with some adjustments we made with our lineup and ability to adjust to what was demanded of us,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “We made more consistent passes and better touches on the ball than at our jamboree less than a week ago. We still have some work to do, but we’re moving in the right direction.”
Coeur d’Alene Charter faces St. Maries on Friday at The Fields.
McCall-Donnelly visits Timberlake today.
“McCall-Donnelly played a good, physical match against us,” Smith said. “It was a great early season win.”

ST. MARIES — The visiting Bulldogs scored twice in the second half to beat the Lumberjacks in an Intermountain League match.
“The girls have made great improvement just since the Timberlake game,” St. Maries coach Amber Morris said. “The team is looking strong. We just need to make a few more adjustments.”

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior midfielder Michael Chan and junior midfielder JZ Stimak-Eckman each recorded hat tricks for the Timberwolves in an Inland Empire League shutout of the Bengals at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.
“With this being our opening game, I knew that nerves could play a role,” said Lake City coach Kevin Jump, whose team led 8-0 at halftime. “Michael had two outstanding finishes early in the match and the team used that energy to carry us to a very strong first half. Our defense was outstanding.”
Junior forward Jacob Molina had two goals and two assists for Lake City (1-0-0, 1-0-0 IEL), which travels to Moscow on Thursday.
