PREP GIRLS SOCCER: Lake City falls to Sandpoint in opener

| August 19, 2023 1:15 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Sandpoint senior Aliya Strock, who was playing through a severely bloody nose and an injury, scored the game's only goal in the 81st minute to lift the Sandpoint Bulldogs past the Lake City Timberwolves in the nonleague season opener for both teams Friday at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

The game pitted two state tournament teams from last season. Lake City placed third in 5A in 2022, and Sandpoint lost in the third-place game in 4A.

Lake City dominated on all fronts in the first half, Sandpoint coach Conor Baranski said.

Midway through the second half, Sandpoint’s Madeline Mitchell received a red card, and the Bulldogs were down a player the rest of the match.

Lake City travels to Lewiston on Tuesday.
