FAST FIVE Paula Schloesser cooks with joy at the Post Falls American Legion

Meet Paula Schloesser, a staple of the Post Falls American Legion's volunteer kitchen crew. Paula was born in Spokane. She has lived in Post Falls for 15 years. She retired in February 2019. Paula has two daughters and four grandchildren.

1) How and when did you become a volunteer at the Post Falls American Legion?

After COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, I was looking for something to do. I saw a post on the Facebook site Coeur d'Alene Ladies. The American Legion was looking for volunteers to help in the kitchen. Since I had 16 years of food service experience for a school, I thought I would try this. I met with Debbie Shaw, the adjutant's wife, and she took me to meet Corky the kitchen manager. I felt very comfortable so I started volunteering in June 2021.

2) What are a few things you most enjoy about working in the kitchen at the Legion?

Working in the kitchen has been such a wonderful experience. Corky and I and all the rest of our volunteers have made a great team. I have met so many members and made wonderful new friends. It's like one big family and we all care about everyone. I volunteer three times a week.

3) What are some of your favorite dishes to make, at home and while volunteering?

The fun dish I like to make is for Wednesday, our taco night. It is a lot of work and everyone loves our tacos. It's one of the busiest nights. Crazy fast pace. I also love helping to prepare for our Sunday breakfast. Just to see the smiles on everyone's face makes me happy.

I don't really cook much for myself at home, but when I do, I make a great baked salmon.

4) What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Surprising thing about me is that I own my own home and I do all the upkeep on it regarding mowing, snowblowing and raking all the leaves that come down in the fall. I try to do repairs on the inside as well.

5) Why should community members donate their time to organizations such as the American Legion, and what fulfillment do you receive from giving so much of yours?

Volunteering at the American Legion is such a wonderful experience. Not only by meeting new people and making so many new friends, it makes my heart feel good for doing good for others.
