ATHOL — Fire destroyed a home in Athol on Monday. There were no injuries.

Joshua Delamarian, division chief with the Timberlake Fire Protection District, said the fire on East Howard Road was reported around 4 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, they found a single-family home fully involved, and the flames had also spread into trees and surrounding wildland.

Delamarian said while firefighters gained control of the structure fire, the home was a total loss. They were on the scene until about 10 p.m. He said they were also able to quickly put out the wildland fire.

One person was home at the time of the fire and made it to safety. A dog also made it out.

Investigators from the Idaho State Fire Marshal’s Office determined "the careless disregard of smoking material" caused the fire, according to a post on its Facebook page.

Delamarian said firefighters from Northern Lakes, Coeur d'Alene, Spirit Lake and Selkirk fire departments also responded to the blaze.
