National Academies of Practice inducts NIC employee
The National Academies of Practice announced North Idaho College’s Marty Matney as a Distinguished Fellow in the Athletic Training Academy during an induction ceremony April 1 in Washington, D.C.
Matney serves as NIC’s Health Operations manager at the college’s Workforce Training Center in Post Falls.
Founded in 1981, the National Academies of Practice is a nonprofit organization that advises governmental entities on the health care system. Matney said as a distinguished fellow, he will review and advocate for federal and state regulations and laws as they pertain to interprofessional health care. Fellows also create white papers on interprofessional health care delivery and provide legislative support on matters related to patient access, reimbursement and other interprofessional concerns.
“I have spent my career advocating for the athletic trainer as a health care provider equal to those who provide direct patient care under the supervision of the physician, where we focus on injury prevention, emergency care and rehabilitation of the physically active,” Matney said. “This honor will allow me to continue supporting my profession with other like-minded professionals not only in athletic training but in other health care professions we often work with.”
According to the National Academies of Practice, fellowship is extended to those who have excelled in their profession and are dedicated to furthering interprofessional practice, scholarship and policy in support of interprofessional care.
“Here I can contribute to the dialogue of interprofessional health care and public health issues on a national perspective and work with those who share this passion,” Matney said. “This honor came completely unexpected and is something I take seriously as I will work to include my profession in the national discussion of access to health care across disciplines.”

Hayden Lake Law, PLLC opens in Hayden
Hayden Lake Law, PLLC recently opened in Hayden. Nicholas Peterson is the managing partner.
The firm focuses on estate planning, probate, LLC formation, contract negotiation and contract review.
Peterson is a graduate of Coeur d'Alene High School, the University of Idaho and Gonzaga University School of Law.
At Gonzaga, he was a Paul and Lita Luvera Scholarship recipient, a member of the Student Bar Association, and volunteered to educate high school students on their constitutional rights. He recently received an award for the North Idaho Business Journal's Top 40 Under 40.
Peterson is based in Hayden but said he does not have traditional office space. He said he meets at his clients' residences or a conference room if they feel more comfortable in a public space.
"I started my firm with the belief that communication and transparency are the backbones of a lawyer-client relationship," he wrote. "Therefore, I offer clear flat rates or hourly rates for my work and payment plans to fit clients' needs."
