PREP ROUNDUP: Kellogg sweeps in first high school tourney at Galena Ridge

KELLOGG — Kellogg senior Stephen Paul shot a 2-over 72 to edge St. Maries senior Seth Swallows by a stroke for boys medalist honors at the Kellogg Invitational on Thursday at Galena Ridge Golf Course.

Bonners Ferry junior Avery Bayer was girls medalist with a 3-over 73.

Kellogg swept the team titles at the tournament, the first high school event at the course since it opened in June 2010.

POST FALLS — After the 3A Tigers romped to a 15-1 victory in the opener, the 5A Trojans scored nine runs in the first three innings on the nightcap en route to a 9-7 win and a split on their nonleague doubleheader.

Logan Walsh homered in each game for Timberlake (11-7), and finished 6 for 8 with six RBIs and four runs scored. Walsh hit a solo homer in the third inning of the opener, and a two-run shot in the sixth inning of the nightcap.

Marissa Needs went 6 for 8 for the Tigers, with two RBIs and three runs scored. Allilah Dykes went 2 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs in the opener, and Alycia Cameron was 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Acacia Pecor struck out seven in five innings and scattered four hits in the first game.

Katie Berg doubled and drove in three runs in the second game for Post Falls (7-11), and Kayla Rouse finished with four hits on the day.

Timberlake travels to Bonners Ferry on Monday for an Intermountain League game.

Post Falls is home vs. Lewiston on Tuesday in an Inland Empire League doubleheader.

SANDPOINT — Senior Catherine Bakken went 6 for 8 with a home run, double, eight RBIs and five runs scored as the visiting Vikings swept the Bulldogs in Inland Empire League play at War Memorial Field.

Bakken hit a grand slam in the fourth inning of the first game, finishing with six RBIs for Coeur d’Alene (12-4, 9-3 IEL). Abbie Linder also homered in the opener for the Vikings, and Chloe Burke went 3 for 4 with a double and four runs scored.

In the second game, Leah Nordman allowed one hit over 3.2 innings, striking out three and walking three for Coeur d’Alene.

Kristine Schmidt, who struck out six in a five-inning two-hitter in the opener, struck out all four batters she faced in relief in the nightcap. She also drove in three runs in the second game.

Preslie McLaughlin went 5 for 8 on the day for the Vikings.

Sandpoint is 0-20, 0-12.

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Lewiston on Saturday in a key IEL doubleheader.

ST. MARIES — Stacie Mitchell doubled in the tiebreaking run in the bottom of the fifth inning, and the 2A Lumberjacks went on to beat the 4A Hawks.

Mitchell then scored on a single by McKayla Spray as part of a three-run inning for St. Maries (11-3).

Watkins struck out 15, walked two and gave up five hits for the Lumberjacks, and she hit a two-run homer in the first inning to put St. Maries up 2-1. She finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

“Defense was solid all throughout the day,” St. Maries coach Lane Watkins said. “Today was all about the bats; we attacked the early pitches, we got our runners on, and we got 'em in. And when they got runners on, the defense came through.”

Katie Dewey had two hits for Lakeland (4-12), which tied the game with two runs in the top of the fifth.

On Saturday, Lakeland plays host to Lake City in an Inland Empire League doubleheader, and St. Maries plays host to Liberty of Spangle, Wash., in a noon twinbill on senior day.

POST FALLS — Senior Jake Bustamante and junior Isaac Ziegler had three RBIs each for the Trojans, who used a nine-run third inning to move past the Bears in the conclusion of an Inland Empire League game delayed by darkness on March 21.

The game was resumed in the bottom of the second inning, with Moscow leading 3-2.

Junior Tyler French hit a two-run home run in the third inning for Post Falls, which had six players score two runs.

“We got some big hits from both Isaac and Tyler,” Post Falls coach Kurt Reese said. “It was nice to see the kids respond and play well. It’s time for us to start building momentum toward regionals.”

Post Falls (10-11, 8-8 IEL) hosts Lewiston in a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Moscow (5-13, 2-8) travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday for a doubleheader.

Sam Lindsley struck out 15 in a three-hit shutout in the opener for Grangeville (8-10, 2-2 CIL).

Boys matches were played at Coeur d’Alene High, while girls matches were played at Lake City.

The Timberwolves swept in girls singles.

Both teams will compete in the Inland Empire Classic today and Saturday in Spokane.
