CDA SCHOOL LEVY: Vote yes
When you think about voting for a school levy, you might not be thinking of type 1 diabetes, but you should be. You might not be thinking of the special care schools are, by Federal law, required to administer to children with disabilities. There is a whole spectrum of care for various ailments.
I want to focus on type 1 diabetes. Many confuse this with type 2. Type 1 means the pancreas is no longer working, or working improperly; this requires insulin shots for life. Low blood sugar levels are life threatening in a very short time. Yes, a child can die. Schools must have a nurse or trained non-medical person on staff for all school hours and any school sponsored function to care for these kids. This isn’t one shot and done; this can be many shots throughout the day. There is also the tracking of food intake and knowing the correct amount of insulin to administer based on carbs. The training, staff and time that goes into this care is covered by the school levies.
Obviously, a schools budget encompasses buildings, teachers, sports, maintenance, transportation and administration. Please don’t forget about the special needs of certain children. All children are our future and it’s in everyone’s best interest to invest in their future.
Education of our youth is an investment. Please support our schools and vote yes, on the upcoming levy.
