PREP BASEBALL: IEL-leading Lake City sweeps Post Falls

| April 23, 2023 1:25 AM

POST FALLS — Cooper Smith and Joe DuCoeur each had two hits and drove in two runs in the nightcap, and the first-place Lake City Timberwolves finished off a sweep of the Post Falls Trojans with an 8-1 victory Saturday at Post Falls High.

Lake City (15-4, 14-0 IEL) won the first game 5-3, as Nate Weatherhead struck out 10 and scattered four hits in six innings.

“We will take the wins, but when Nate Weatherhead is pitching his tail off and has 10 Ks, I expect more than a 5-3 win,” Lake City coach Mike Criswell said. “I think we got out of our typical approach at the plate that has been working. We left seven guys on and sprinkled some hits around. We are going to need to refocus for Tuesday.”

AJ Currie, Cooper Reese and Eric Bumbaugh teamed for 10 strikeouts in the second game, and allowed four hits. Bumbaugh went 2 for 4 and scored twice for Lake City.

“The second game wasn’t that different, but it was a group effort on the mound,” Criswell said. “We sprayed a few more hits around and had a little better approach, but some key guys were absent and we really need them.”

In the first game, Cole Stoddard had two hits for Lake City, including an RBI single in the third to put the T-Wolves up 2-0. Avrey Cherry’s RBI single in the third made it 3-0.

Post Falls (8-10, 6-7) loaded the bases in the bottom on Langan Naylor’s single off the umpire’s leg, and Tyler French’s two-run single brought the Trojans within a run.

“The kids competed well,” Post Falls coach Kurt Reese said. “We had a tough week last week and I asked the kids to respond from some adversity and was happy with how we played. We didn’t have a giant meltdown like we’d had in recent weeks and cut down on the errors. We played some good baseball today.”

In the sixth, Cooper Smith singled in a run for Lake City, and a throwing error on the play allowed Cherry to score from third, making it 5-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jackson George’s RBI single pulled Post Falls within 5-3. The Trojans loaded the bases with one out, but Lake City reliever Travis Usdrowski struck out the next batter, then tagged out a Post Falls runner trying to score from third on a wild pitch to end the game.

The teams meet again Tuesday in an IEL doubleheader, this time at Lake City.

“We saw their three guys and competed well against them and had some good, quality at-bats," Reese said. "But we got some things figured out and hopefully we’ll go there on Tuesday, get some wins and turn this around.”

Lake City leads the IEL by three games over Coeur d’Alene, with four to play.

COEUR d’ALENE — The pitching took care of things for Vikings in the opener.

As for the nightcap, it was a little bit of everyone.

Seniors Aaron Gwaltney and Bryce Stockton combined to allow four hits in the opener for Coeur d’Alene, which earned the sweep behind a four-RBI nightcap from Bryce Hall.

“Aaron just found his groove on the mound in the third inning,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “Bryce is just difficult to hit at this level and building confidence each time he steps on the mound.”

Coeur d’Alene took the lead in the first inning after Hall scored on a sacrifice fly and Andrew Karns scored on a groundout. Senior Kyle Bridge singled leading off the fourth and scored on an RBI single by Hall.

The Vikings used a six-run bottom of the sixth inning in the second game to take control.

“Our at-bats were great in the second game,” Karns said. “We were taking walks, waiting for our pitch and got the clutch hit when we needed it. Moscow’s a good, well-coached team that hit up and down the lineup. We did a good job of running the bases today, especially in the second game. I felt like we got better today.”

ROCKFORD, Wash. — Senior Caden Robinett allowed one hit, a first-inning double to Freeman’s Bodie Ramsey as the Tigers bounced back from a loss in the first game to split with the Scotties in a nonleague doubleheader.

“Caden was flat dominant and came with his ‘A’ game,” said Timberlake coach Bryce Johnson of Robinett, who struck out 12 and walked one. “Runs were at a premium and we had to scratch out a win for him.”

Kenny Wells scored all three runs for the Tigers in the second game.

“He just kept getting on base and were able to get some timely hits to get him in,” Johnson said.

In the opener, Timberlake scored all five of its runs in the sixth inning, but was unable to dig out of an early deficit.

“We were just trying to battle back,” Johnson said. “We put ourselves in position, but did not play a clean game in that one.”
