PREP ROUNDUP: Bronco boy Cogley dashes at Big Daddy Invitational

| April 22, 2023 1:20 AM

• TRACK AND FIELD

COEUR d’ALENE — Standing 6-foot-5, with a lot of speed, it’s no wonder why Lake City senior Trevor Cogley chose to be a Bronco.

And if Friday’s results are any indication, Boise State is going to get him to another level someday.

Cogley notched wins in the 400-meter dash, as well as the 200 in Friday’s Big Daddy Invitational at Coeur d’Alene High.

Earlier this season, Cogley had wins in the 100, 200 and 400 at the Lewiston Invitational on March 23.

“The weather isn’t great up here always,” Cogley said. “Hopefully, it’s going to get better in the coming weeks.”

Cogley did not compete in the 400 as a freshman, and only ran the event once as a sophomore.

“The first time he ran it, I knew he’d be good because of his body type,” Lake City coach Kelly Reed said. “Being 6-5, he’s really long-limbed. And he’s really fast. All of those things make a really good 400 runner.”

Cogley won the 400 in 48.13 seconds and 200 in 22.55.

Cogley also credits his work with the Spokane Speed Academy club team for helping him improve the last two years.

“I’ve been doing track straight for the last year or so,” said Cogley, who finished 12th in the 400 at the Junior Olympics last August in Sacramento, Calif. “I haven’t really rested and just continued to work, lift weights and eat right. All of that hard work has paid off.”

Cogley, who also played receiver in football at Lake City, signed earlier this week to continue his track and field career at Boise State, where he’ll compete in the 400 for the Broncos.

“It’s a great town and I really like the vibe there,” Cogley said. “The coaches are great, and it’s a pretty good team. It just felt like a pretty good place for me to go.”

Cogley also had interest in Eastern Washington and Idaho, but he was sold after last year's state track meet at Dona Larsen Park, home of the Bronco program.

“I really liked the setting and running on their track,” said Cogley, who finished third in the state 5A 400-meter run last year. “It was nice and a cool experience. It kind of gave me a goal to shoot for as far as working over the summer.”

Cogley’s time of 48.54 seconds, set at the Pasco Invitational last Saturday, is the fastest in the state. He’s currently third in the 200 (22.15).

“He just keeps getting better,” Reed said. “You never PR week to week, but he gets better each week and gets more used to the race and more comfortable with it. There’s some nuances to it that he’s figuring out. He’s been steadily improving all year and put in a lot of work during the winter, running some during the indoor (club) season, and has been getting after it for a year now.”

Cogley knows the work isn’t done quite yet for this season.

“I’ve got to continue to improve in the 200,” Cogley said. “I know there’s a few kids ahead of me. It’s been hard with training to catch my breath in the cold weather. But I’m sure it’s the same way in the rest of the state. So everyone else is feeling it.”

“Trevor would be good in any event anywhere from the 1,600 down,” Reed said. “There’s a lot of advantages to being 6-foot-5. He’d be a really good hurdler in college. When you get an athlete like that, he could be great in a lot of different events.”

Also at the Big Daddy meet, the Lakeland 4x100 boys relay team of Thomas Calder, Nick Nowell, Terry Edwards and Weston Saputski broke the school record in 43.18 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark set in 2016 (43.55 seconds).

Coeur d'Alene senior Kytriana Burrell won both the 100 and 200, helping lead the Viking girls to the team title with 124.5 points.

Post Falls won the boys team title with 137 points.
