Trash Tag — you're it!

| April 21, 2023 1:05 AM

Community volunteers are welcome to join the third annual Trash Tag Challenge starting at 11 a.m. April 30 at the Treaty Rock Picnic Area in Post Falls.

Volunteers will help clean sections of Interstate 90, rest areas and nearby parks in Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene until 1:30 p.m.

Volunteers will be provided with safety vests, trash bags, zip ties and plastic gloves. Participants will be briefed about Idaho Transportation Department safety requirements and will be asked to sign liability forms before being dispatched to various locations.

Families and employee groups are encouraged to participate. Adults with children will be dispatched to rest areas or nearby parks. The recommended age for children is 7 and older, with guardian supervision.

Volunteers should prepare for the Trash Tag Challenge by wearing closed-toe shoes and long pants. Litter pick-up tools and gloves will be helpful. Water and snacks will be provided at Treaty Rock Park.

Sign-up is strongly encouraged, so organizers can guarantee volunteer resources, ensure Idaho Transportation Department liability requirements are met and provide needed communication. Visit bit.ly/trashtag2023 to sign up online.

The annual event is organized during Earth Month to take collective action in keeping the community beautiful. Trash accumulates during the winter months on freeway banks, becoming glaringly visible once the snow melts. Last year, the Civic Engagement Alliance had more than 80 volunteers of all ages join in a one-day effort to raise awareness to reduce trash visible on I-90.

Community members are challenged this year to collectively fill 200 bags of trash at the event.

“We love the enthusiasm community members bring to the event," said Jessica Mahuron, Civic Engagement Alliance board president. "Besides being for a good cause, it’s a fun outdoor activity that promotes exercise and teamwork.”

The Trash Tag Challenge is a global movement partnered with National Cleanup Day that encourages people to pick up trash and post photos of their good deeds with the hashtag #trashtag.
