SANDPOINT — The door was wide open for the visiting Lakeland Hawks to notch a pair of Inland Empire League wins over the Sandpoint Bulldogs at Memorial Field on Thursday.

But Lakeland was unable to push through when it counted.

Junior Finn Mellander had four RBIs on the day for Sandpoint, which swept the Hawks 11-6 and 8-6.

“We had leads in both games tonight in the later innings, but couldn’t close it out,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “We had some mental errors and mistakes that really cost us in both games.”

Lakeland had three errors in the opener, which was tied 5-5 after four innings before Sandpoint scored four in the bottom of the fifth.

Junior Roan Reilly had two RBIs in the second game for Lakeland (3-13, 2-8 IEL), which is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Lewiston on Tuesday.

In the nightcap, with the game tied 6-6, Sandpoint senior Jack Zimmerman stole home as Reilly was winding up to pitch to put his team on top. On the next pitch, Kody Barlow extended the advantage to 8-6 on an RBI single for Sandpoint (5-8, 2-6), which travels to Lewiston for a doubleheader on Saturday.
