TAXES: We don’t pay enough

| April 19, 2023 1:00 AM

I am calling for sweeping tax increases.

Why? Because quite simply I use more social services than I pay for. Yes, I am a homeowner who already pays property taxes.

However:

I also drive on state and county roads; which are in desperate need of repair (especially the county roads). Where does the funding come from?

I also enjoy the safety (and peace of mind) knowing the state police and county sheriffs are on patrol; who pays for the jail and jailors who keep the convicts safely away from me?

I also appreciate the local schools because a well educated public is a safer, healthier, more productive public; although my kids are out of school, someday my grandchildren will need a great school with great teachers and staff — and that doesn’t come cheap nor overnight.

I also appreciate the future need for paramedics and firemen; well trained, ready responders are essential even if we did not need them today.

The awesome Library System we have?

A community college that trains the skilled trades we depend on to keep the lights on, the water flowing, and the toilets emptying?

Who pays for all of these public services that I use? Am I truly paying my fair share for this moment and for future generations; no, I am not and neither are you. Or am I just a greedy old selfish curmudgeon, never content nor grateful, pious and blind to the sequoia sticking out of my eye?

Raise taxes now!
