PREP TRACK AND FIELD: Thornton, Barnhart weather elements; Trojans nab team title

POST FALLS — The weather might not have been the best at times, but for Post Falls senior Noelle Thornton, it was more how she handled it when the time came during the 100-meter hurdles.

Thornton, a senior, won the 100 hurdles in 17.07 seconds, a season and personal best during the race, which went from sunny during her heat to snowy by the third heat of the race during the annual Christina Finney Relays at Post Falls High on Tuesday.

“I’ve been going for a personal record all season, and was hoping to get that today,” Thornton said. “Then, the weather got bad and I wasn't sure if I could do it.”

Thornton also won the event at the Kootenai County Challenge on April 7 at Timberlake High.

“Running the hurdles is a big mental game,” Thornton said. “You’ve got to stick with it, even when the weather is bad and make sure you’re doing everything you can to have a good race.”

As Thornton prepared for the race, she found shelter from a brief rainstorm.

“I went inside to the gym to warm up because it was pouring rain,” Thornton said. “You’ve just got to be able to stay warm the entire time. Maybe the hardest part is making sure you don’t sit down for a long time between races.

Post Falls won the combined team title with 290.5 points.

The meet takes the boys and girls total team points to declare a team champion.

“I was really pleased with how our kids performed,” Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. “All of the teams performed really well considering the conditions. There were some good times with everything being blustery. For our kids, it was a good team effort from top to bottom for us.”

”Facing competition ranging from the 5A to 3A level didn’t phase Timberlake junior Jacob Barnhart in the 1,600 on Tuesday.

“I’ve just been going for it a lot more this year knowing I can do it,” said Barnhart, who won the state 3A cross country title at Lewiston Orchards in October. “I’ve definitely extended my stride a little bit as well, but winning the state title in October has really boosted my confidence. It really showed me that I’m capable of doing it if I put my mind to it.”

Barnhart won the boys 1,600 in 4 minutes, 34.80 seconds.

“I know I’m capable of breaking 4:30 and just need to go out and do it,” Barnhart said. “I’ve been doing a lot of running and speed training this winter and working on my pace.”

All that while dealing with a leg injury this season.

“I’ve been having (right) calf issues since the start of the season,” Barnhart said. “It kind of feels like it’s strained, but I’ve been able to get through it.”

Lake City senior Trevor Cogley, a Boise State commit, won the 100- and 200-meter dash.

Lakeland senior Preston Jeffs won the shot put and discus.
