PREP SOFTBALL: Lake City sweeps Lewiston, takes over first place in IEL
COEUR d’ALENE — Freshman pinch hitter Karsyn Dement singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh and scored the winning run on KaeLee Kolden’s single, and the Lake City Timberwolves went on to sweep the Lewiston Bengals 9-8 and 9-3 in Inland Empire League softball Saturday on senior day at Lake City.
Senior catcher Hope Bodak, who sang the national anthem, hit two home runs in the first game for Lake City (10-2, 7-1 IEL), which broke a tie with Lewiston (6-8, 5-3) for first place in the combined 5A/4A league. Bodak finished 5 for 7 with five RBIs and three runs scored on the day.
“Our team came out ready to play today,” Lake City coach Jordyn Hensley said. “KaeLee Kolden, Taylor Hill and Hope Bodak all had an incredible day at the plate. Karsyn had a clutch pinch hit in game one, and kept the momentum rolling at the plate in game two.”
Hill also homered twice as Lake City went yard five times in the opener. The T-Wolves went back-to-back-to-back in the third — Kolden, then Hill, then Bodak. Kolden went 4 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored in the opener.
Evanne Douglass hit a grand slam in the fifth to put Lewiston up 8-6.
Layla Gugino’s two-run double in the bottom of the sixth tied it at 8.
In the second game, sophomore Kylee Palmer struck out 10 and scattered six hits in 5.2 innings for Lake City. Bodak went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs.
“We had the opportunity to celebrate Brooklyn Wullenwaber, Hope, Jenna Glenn and our three awesome managers,” Hensley said. “I can’t think of a better way to honor the work that our senior class has put in than with these two big wins.”
Lake City plays host to second-place Coeur d’Alene (7-3, 4-2) on Thursday in an IEL doubleheader.
