PREP BASEBALL: Cd'A, Post Falls split; Lake City sweeps Lewiston

| April 16, 2023 1:25 AM

POST FALLS — In the loaded Inland Empire League, especially within the 5A programs, any team on any given day could have that moment.

On Saturday, both the Coeur d’Alene Vikings and Post Falls Trojans had theirs.

In the first game, Jake Bustamante and Caleb Jimerson had RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 2-all tie and push the Trojans to a 4-2 win. In the second game, Andrew Karns delivered a two-run double in the top of the fourth inning as the Vikings topped the Trojans 5-3 to get the split on Saturday at Post Falls High.

Junior Austin DeBoer struck out six in five innings before Danny Davoren and Isaac Ziegler closed out the game on the mound for Post Falls.

“Austin pitched really well and worked through some good adversity with some errors and walks,” Post Falls coach Kurt Reese said. “Ziegler came in and did a good job to close it out and our bats did just enough to get the win.”

Aidan Blanco allowed one hit in 3.1 innings, striking out five for Coeur d’Alene in the first game.

“Aidan did a fantastic job, but we just had one bad inning,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “To DeBoer’s credit, he kept us off balance. Each game in our league is tough and really, if you have a lopsided score, it’s an odd day.”

Senior Bryce Stockton pitched the final 2.1 innings of the second game for Coeur d’Alene (9-7, 9-1 IEL), which had won six straight before falling in the opener.

“I was pleased with our pitching all day today,” Karns said. “We’re running the bases like we want too and getting better and better on our two-strike hitting. The guys are battling and having fun.”

Post Falls is 7-7, 5-4.

Both teams are scheduled to play IEL doubleheaders on Tuesday, with Coeur d’Alene at Lake City and Post Falls hosting Lakeland.

Jake Dannenberg had two RBIs in the first game and Cooper Reese (7) and Nate Weatherhead (6) combined to strike out 13 in the opener for Lake City.

"It was nice to get contributions from different guys," Lake City coach Mike Criswell said. "Jake Dannenberg had two sac flies, and Travis Usdrowski and Cole Stoddard each had two hits. We ran the bases well and pressured all game."

Bumbaugh drove in four runs in the second game, Mangini two for Lake City (11-4, 10-0 IEL), which hosts Coeur d’Alene in an Inland Empire League doubleheader on Tuesday.

"In the second game we were very selective and looked for strikes in the zone," Criswell said. "Eric plays with a lot of energy, so when he is on we are usually in a good place.
