NIC to host CeCe Curtis jazz concert

| April 14, 2023 1:00 AM

North Idaho College and the NIC American Indian Student Alliance are hosting a CeCe Curtis jazz concert at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in the Lake Coeur d’Alene Room of the Edminster Student Union Building.

The concert, sponsored by the American Indian Advisory Committee and the Idaho Humanities Council, is free and open to the public.

Curtis will pay tribute to the 1930s “Queen of Swing” Mildred Bailey, a fellow Coeur d’Alene tribal member. The three-piece band will perform several of Bailey’s classic songs including “Rockin’ Chair” and “A Tisket a Tasket.”

“My goal when performing Mildred Bailey's songs is to bring awareness to her musical talent, to honor her and her contribution to the world,” Curtis said. “It's also important to me that I strive to inspire and encourage fellow Native people, whether youth or elder, to pursue music and to dream big.”

Refreshments are provided and attendees are encouraged to dress in “1930s swing style.”

The performance caps off NIC’s celebration of Native American Heritage Week, which includes:

“Traditional Craft Workshop: Gourd Peyote Rattle” on Monday, April 17

“Research and Practice as Tribal Nation Building in Action” lecture Tuesday, April 18

“Satire and Sovereignty in The Thanksgiving Play” lecture Tuesday, April 18
