PREP ROUNDUP: Coeur d'Alene's Schmidt shuts out Post Falls twice

COEUR d’ALENE — Kristine Schmidt pitched a pair of shutouts and struck out 18 in two games as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings swept the visiting Post Falls Trojans 8-0 and 10-0 in Inland Empire League softball Thursday at Larry Schwenke Field.
Schmidt pitched a two-hitter in the opener for Coeur d’Alene (7-3, 4-2 IEL), and struck out 11 in the nightcap. She did not walk a batter in either game.
Delaney Gosch went 5 for 9 with three RBIs and five runs scored for the Vikings. She went 3 for 4 with three runs in the first game, and hit a two-run homer in the second game.
Schmidt was 4 for 6 on the day with three doubles, a triple and three RBIs. Chloe Burke was 4 for 8 with four runs scored for Coeur d’Alene. Makiya McPhedran was 3 for 4 with three RBIs in the second game.
Jaelei Davis had three of Post Falls’ seven hits on the day.
Post Falls (2-8, 2-6) plays a doubleheader at Sandpoint on Saturday.
Coeur d’Alene returns to action next Thursday with a doubleheader at Coeur d’Alene.

MOSCOW — The visiting Hawks rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the second game and brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth and seventh innings, but came up short and were swept by the Bears in Inland Empire League play.
Lakeland (2-7, 0-4 IEL) committed 13 errors in the two games.
Kiersten Drake’s two-run single keyed a three-run sixth inning of the second game that pulled the Hawks within two runs.
Aubrie Goncalves gave up just three hits in the second game for Lakeland, but the Hawks committed five errors. Goncalves struck out two and walked four.
Alexis Hanna went 4 for 7 on the day for Lakeland, which plays host to Post Falls on Tuesday in a doubleheader.
Moscow is 10-4, 4-4.

BONNERS FERRY — Timberlake junior Nacree Kyllonen notched wins in the 100- and 200-meter dash, as well as the 4x100 relay as the Tigers beat the Badgers in an Intermountain League dual at Bonners Ferry High.
Timberlake’s girls won 87.5-58.5, while the Tiger boys won 113.66-31.33.
Timberlake senior Alex Marquez won the 100 and 200, as well as winning legs of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay.
Timberlake will compete in the Van Kuren Invitational on Saturday at Cheney High.

“I was very happy to see how our team stayed focused after the win earlier in the day against Lewiston,” Coeur d’Alene boys coach Corey DeLeonard said. “It would have been easy for our kids to relax after that victory, but they were able to keep their level of play up and produce some great wins.”
