LEWISTON — Once the hits started falling late, the day went from good to great for the Coeur d’Alene Vikings at Church Field.

Senior Bryce Hall went 4 for 4 with three runs scored in the opener, then senior Andrew Karns scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning of the second game as the Vikings swept the Lewiston Bengals 8-1 and 4-3 in Inland Empire League play on Tuesday.

Senior Bryce Stockton struck out six over six innings in the opener, allowing four hits and two walks.

In the nightcap, Karns scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the top of the seventh, then struck out the side in the bottom half of the inning, rallying the Vikings to complete the sweep. Senior Cooper Erickson struck out five in the second game for Coeur d’Alene, which allowed no earned runs in the second game.

“Bryce gave us a great start,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “Cooper battled through some rough innings and we were able to close it out. Their pitching kept us off balance in the second game, but we were able to put together some hits and start having some things come together.”

Senior Elliot Smart had three hits and a run scored for Coeur d’Alene, which trailed 3-0 entering the seventh inning of the nightcap. Smart led off with a single and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Harrison Trunkey-Evans. Trunkey-Evans brought home Nolan Christ and Karns singled home Trunkey-Evans to tie the game at 3-3.

Karns also praised the defense of catchers Chase Saunders (first game) and Richie Hackett (second game).

“Our catchers did a fantastic job defensively,” Erik Karns said. “It’s such a big park, and they did a great job of blocking pitches and didn’t let anything through. That was really the difference in the game. Both of those guys are coming along really well.”

Coeur d’Alene (8-6, 8-0 IEL) travels to Post Falls for an IEL doubleheader on Saturday.
