PREP SOFTBALL: Watkins nearly perfect as St. Maries sweeps Kellogg
ST. MARIES — Taci Watkins pitched a no-hitter in the first game and a one-hitter in the nightcap as the St. Maries Lumberjacks swept the Kellogg Wildcats 10-0 and 10-0 in Central Idaho League play Saturday.
Watkins struck out 12 in the five-inning opener for St. Maries (6-2, 5-0 CIL), and only a hit batsman with one out in the fifth inning prevented a perfect game.
Madie Thomas hit a two-run homer in the second inning, and McKayla Spray hit a two-run triple in the third.
In the second game, Watkins struck out 13. She hit a batter in the third, and allowed a two-out single in the fifth.
Anna Sande was 2 for 4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored for the Lumberjacks.
Kellogg (0-3, 0-3) travels to Priest River on Tuesday.
St. Maries plays host to Grangeville on Tuesday.

RATHDRUM — Delaney Gosch homered in both games against her former team, and the Vikings swept the host Hawks in Inland Empire League play.
Gosch hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the opener for Coeur d’Alene (5-1, 2-0 IEL), and a solo homer in the third inning of the second game. For the day, she finished 6 of 9 with five RBIs and four runs scored.
Kristine Schmidt struck out 12 in the opener for Coeur d’Alene, and fanned 10 in 6.2 innings of relief in the second game. She also hit a three-run homer in the sixth in the opener. For the day, she was 6 for 8 with four RBIs.
Morgan Knutson was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored in the second game for the Vikings.
Katie Dewey hit a grand slam in the first inning of the nightcap for Lakeland (1-5, 0-2).
On Tuesday, Coeur d’Alene plays an IEL doubleheader at Lewiston, and Lakeland plays at Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls, Wash.

MOSCOW — The visiting Timberwolves rallied from a 7-0 deficit after three innings in the first game, and went on to sweep the Bears in Inland Empire League play.
Hope Bodak hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning of the opener for Lake City (6-2, 3-1 IEL) and a two-run homer in the first inning of the second game. She finished 4 for 5 with five RBIs and six runs scored.
Layla Gugino hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning of the second game for the Timberwolves, and Kylee Palmer added a solo shot in the sixth.
KaeLee Kolden went 6 for 10 on the day with two triples, six RBIs and four runs scored for Lake City. Kaydence Constable was 5 for 9 with three RBIs for the T-Wolves.
“I am proud of our team coming back to win the first game,” Lake City coach Jordyn Hensley said. “They made adjustments at the plate and started hitting the ball well. KaeLee Kolden, Kaydence Constable and Hope Bodak led our offense today.”
Lake City travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday for an IEL twinbill.
Moscow (8-4, 2-4) plays host to Lakeland in an IEL doubleheader on Thursday.
