BASEBALL

Coeur d'Alene 11-12

Lakeland 0-3

COEUR d’ALENE — Two games in the sun sure beat the other option for both Lakeland and Coeur d’Alene at Ted Page Field.

In an effort to beat projected afternoon rain showers, the Inland Empire League doubleheader was moved up to 9 a.m. on Friday, with the Vikings sweeping the Hawks.

“The boys were ready to go,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “When we let them know at practice (Thursday), they were like kids in the candy store. It was early, but the boys were relaxed and focused.”

In the opener, Aidan Blanco struck out three in four innings and Aaron Gwaltney allowed one hit in relief for Coeur d’Alene.

“Blanco gave us a lot of good innings in the first game,” Karns said. “And Aaron did a fantastic job in the first game as well, throwing strikes and hitting his spots.”

In the second game, four pitchers combined to limit Lakeland to three runs.

“We’ve thrown a lot of different pitchers in our first 12 games this season,” Karns said. “Some of them haven’t thrown a ton of innings, but it was good to see them hitting their spots.”

Senior Andrew Karns had three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored in the second game for Coeur d’Alene (6-6, 6-0 IEL), which travels to Lewiston for a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Lakeland (0-9, 0-4) hosts Moscow in a doubleheader next Thursday.

“We made too many mistakes on our part to compete with a good team like Coeur d’Alene,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said.
