COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Makiya McPhedran-Torres has played a little bit of everywhere in her four seasons on the Coeur d’Alene varsity softball team.

This year, first base has been her home — at least for now.

On Thursday, McPhedran-Torres went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs, and made two dazzling plays at first base as the Vikings beat the Timberlake Tigers 5-2 in nonleague play at Larry Schwenke Field.

“She’s my utility,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bobbi Darretta said. “Makiya had the game of her life. “She never gets to play one position, but she works hard, she has a good attitude, and plays where she’s needed.”

McPhedran-Torres doubled in a run in the second inning, then hit a two-run double in the fourth inning to break a 2-all tie.

At first base, she made a nice pick on a throw from third base, then ended the game by snaring a liner above her head.

Kristine Schmidt struck out 12 and scattered four hits for Coeur d’Alene (3-1). Freshman Abbie Linder hit her first varsity homer in the first for the Vikings.

“It was tied at one point, so I was glad to see them push through that,” Darretta said. “Kristine pulled us out of a couple innings with strikeouts.”

Alycia Cameron singled in a run for Timberlake (4-5) in the top of the fifth, and the Tigers tied it two batters later on an error following a Jesi Kitchin single.

Timberlake plays at Orofino today at noon.

Coeur d’Alene travels to Lakeland on Saturday for an Inland Empire League doubleheader.

SPIRIT LAKE — Grant Allaway — who struck out nine in 5 ⅓ innings — gave the Tigers a 6-5 lead when he scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning, and Jesse O’Connor scored on an RBI single by Parker Holly as Timberlake held off the Wildcats in a nonleague game at Timberlake High.

Holly, Cooper Lenz and O’Connor finished with two RBIs each for Timberlake.

Reid Whatcott singled to score Travis Eixenberger with the tying run in the top of the sixth for Kellogg (3-3), which is scheduled to play a doubleheader at St. Maries on Saturday. The Wildcats defeated the Lumberjacks 12-8 on Tuesday.

“Kellogg’s a scrappy team,” Timberlake coach Bryce Johnson said. “We had some chances, but just couldn’t put them away. We left 13 runners on base and just kept leaving guys on base and let them hang around. We were putting guys on base, but just couldn’t get them in. Kellogg did a good job of getting out of those key situations.”

Timberlake (5-3) is scheduled to travel to Bonners Ferry for an Intermountain League doubleheader on Saturday.
