COEUR d’ALENE — A confrontation in a parking lot over an alleged attempted burglary culminated in a fatal shooting Friday afternoon, according to the Coeur d’Alene Police Department.

The shooting occurred in the parking area of the shopping center in the 200 block of West Canfield Avenue, where Target is an anchor store.

The incident took place near Michaels, where a man armed with a handgun allegedly witnessed another man reportedly burglarizing vehicles.

After the armed citizen confronted the burglary suspect, police said the suspect got into a vehicle and accelerated toward the other man.

The citizen “ended up on the hood of the suspect’s vehicle,” police said, and fired several shots toward the suspect, hitting him at least once.

The suspect’s vehicle reportedly crashed into a parked car, which threw the shooter off the hood.

When law enforcement arrived at the scene, the suspect was out of the vehicle and on the ground. Both the shooter and the suspected burglar received medical aid and were transported to Kootenai Health.

Police have not released the names of those involved.

The suspect died due to his injuries, police said. The other man’s condition was not known as of Friday afternoon.

Coeur d’Alene police are investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
