PREP FOOTBALL: Lakeland beats Post Falls for first time in 10 years
RATHDRUM — For the first time since 2012, the Battle of the Prairie title went to the team in green.
Thomas Calder and John Cornish scored two touchdowns each for Lakeland, which held off visiting Post Falls 31-28 on Friday night at Corbit Field.
“It was definitely a staple win for us,” Lakeland coach Mike Schroeder said. “When you look back and play these 5A schools like Lake City, Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls, you want to be able to compete. We dropped that game to Coeur d’Alene, but we felt good about the preparation by our kids."
Lakeland (5-1), which fell 14-13 to visiting Coeur d’Alene last Friday, also won at Lake City 30-21 on Aug. 26.
We’re playing that schedule to get into the playoffs and win some games,” Schroeder said. “And it’s going to pay dividends for us.”
Owen Forsman kicked a 36-yard field goal to give Lakeland a 31-14 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Hawks turned the ball over on fumbles on their next two possessions, allowing Post Falls to rally on touchdown runs of 5 and 1 yards by Jake Bustamante of 5 and 1-yard in the fourth quarter.
“Lakeland did a good job of running the football,” Post Falls coach Blaine Bennett said. “I thought they managed the clock really well and did a great job of managing the line of scrimmage."
Post Falls defensive back Cooper Craig recovered a fumble, setting up Bustamante’s run to cut the deficit to 31-21 with 5:42 remaining.
“Cooper is an excellent football play and runs hard,” Bennett said. “He’s physical to the point of contact. Our defense made two really big plays to give us a chance.”
“We were trying to get organized to put the game away, and really got fortunate,” Schroeder said. “In the fourth, we weren’t able to execute correctly and it put us in a bad spot.”
“We made some big plays in the fourth quarter and I was pleased with how we battled,” Bennett said. “We could have quit down 31-14, and our guys showed a lot of maturity and gave ourselves a chance. We felt we could have been successful, but just came up short tonight.”
Lakeland (5-1) travels to Timberlake next Friday.
Post Falls (3-2) faces Mt. Spokane next Friday at Union Stadium in Mead.

“Our defense played excellent tonight,” Lake City coach Brian Fulp said. “They played physical and fast and were much improved over the last couple of weeks.”
Senior Zach Johnson had five carries for 100 yards and three touchdowns and senior Jake Whitehead had 14 carries for 108 yards and a touchdown for Lake City, which was without its top two running backs due to injury.
“Zach definitely got his touches tonight in the backfield,” Fulp said. “Jake ran the ball really well with his opportunities and played really well tonight. I thought our guys played well.”

“Hunter and Vaughn really ran the ball well tonight,” Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said. “We added Cooper Lenz (10 carries for 63 yards) to the backfield and he had some quality touches as well. Our offensive line does a great job of moving people and did again tonight.”
Timberlake (3-1) hosts Lakeland next Friday.
Trey Gibson returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown for St. Maries (0-4).
“St. Maries played really hard,” Amos said. “They just kept fighting out of tough situations. Our defense was on the field a ton, but were able to keep them out of the endzone. St. Maries kept putting themselves in good situations, but we were able to stop it.”
