COEUR d’ALENE — Chances are, if you have more than your opponent, it’s going to be a good day for your squad.

Tuesday was a good day for Lake City against crosstown rival Coeur d’Alene.

Georgia Whitehead scored two goals for the Timberwolves, who outshot the Vikings 17-12 en route to a 4-1 win at Coeur d’Alene High on Tuesday.

“Lake City, they’re a tough team,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “And if you make mistakes, they’re going to punish you. And when you give them opportunities, they’re going to finish it.”

Freshman forward Gianna Callari scored in the fifth minute for Coeur d’Alene.

“We competed, which is one of the things we’ve been focusing on,” Vredenburg said. “We’re trying to compete at each moment of the game. We were connecting passes and created some good chances in the first half. If we can continue to do that, we’ll be better in the long run.”

Lake City (9-0-0, 6-0-0 IEL) hosts Post Falls on Thursday.

“Both teams battled today,” Lake City coach Kevin Jump said. “It was a typical Lake City-Coeur d’Alene rivalry match. Both halves started with goals in the first 60 seconds. Although we played well in the first half, this game came down to the last few minutes, and Connor hit an absolute missile on his free kick.”

Cd’A girls win in

shortened event

POST FALLS — Darkness fell before some of the girls teams could complete 18 holes at the Post Falls Invitational on Monday at The Highlands Golf Course, so officials scored it as a nine-hole event.

Coeur d’Alene freshman Sophie Vignale took medalist honors with an even-par 73, leading the Vikings to a 14-stroke victory over Lewiston.

“I’m really excited for Sophie,” Coeur d’Alene girls coach Jeff Lake said. “Such an awesome score with a freshman playing nine at even par. She was pretty disappointed, though, as she really wanted to keep the round going to see how she finished after 18, but the light just didn’t cooperate.”
