Lakeland wins

Freeman tourney

ROCKFORD, Wash. — Sophomore Olivia Zazuetta totaled 61 assists and 17 assists as the Lakeland Hawks went 6-0 to win the 12-team Freeman Rip-A-Shot Tournament.

Lakeland went 5-0 in pool play, beating La Salle (Union Gap, Wash.) 25-18, 25-13, Omak 25-22, 25-6, Freeman 25-18, 25-18, Timberlake 25-9, 25-19 and Medical Lake 25-9, 25-10.

In the championship match, Lakeland defeated Ridgeline of Liberty Lake, winners of the other pool, 25-18, 25-21.

“We had a lot of fun today and played really well,” said Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger, a 2004 Freeman High grad. “Our setters (Zazuetta and Ella Terzulli) did a really good job mixing up the ball, and our defense kept the ball alive. Ziya (Munyer) and Kenna (Simon) had a lot of blocks that kept the team fighting for another play.”

Simon had 39 kills and 13 blocks on the day for Lakeland (11-6). Lila Kiefer added 36 kills, Munyer 17 blocks, Ellie Carlson 45 digs, Addy Hocking 40 digs, Terzulli 54 assists.

For Badger, it was her first time back at Freeman for a high school volleyball event since she was a three-sport athlete for the Scotties.

“A lot of familiar faces, but my family is still pretty connected,” said Badger, the former Kelsie LaShaw. “It was a special feeling coaching in the same gym I played in, and it felt really good to win. A few years ago we had a club tournament there, but it wasn’t the same as coaching a high school team, and playing against my alma mater.”

Lakeland plays host to Lewiston on Tuesday.

Kellogg d.

Grangeville

KELLOGG — Maddie Cheney had nine kills and three aces for the Wildcats in a 25-16, 25-22, 25-23 win over the Bulldogs in a Central Idaho League match at Andrews Gymnasium.

“We were able to find Maddie and did a good job of passing it to her,” Kellogg coach Stephanie Batchelder said. “Our hitters were placing the ball in the right spots and seeing the court really well.”

Abby Neff had 21 assists and three aces, Olivia Sawyer nine digs and Emily Coe two blocks for Kellogg (4-1, 3-0 CIL), which travels to St. Maries on Tuesday.

Grangeville is 1-3, 1-1.
