| September 7, 2022 1:30 AM

VOLLEYBALL

COEUR d’ALENE — Post Falls has won two straight league titles, but the Coeur d’Alene Vikings showed they’ll be a team to be reckoned with as well this season.

Coeur d’Alene bounced back from a first-set loss to beat the Trojans 19-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-27, 15-11 in the Inland Empire League opener for both teams Tuesday night at Viking Court.

“After the first set, I think we started settling in and playing our game, and getting over the hype of Post Falls,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “Our girls said, ‘We’re a good team too,’ and we did a good job fighting.”

Madi Symons totaled 26 kills, 13 digs and three blocks for Coeur d’Alene (9-0). Paisley Goings added 11 kills and three aces, Bailey Jaworski 24 assists, Gia Janke four blocks, Alexa Stavros nine digs.

Sophomore Elizabeth Hardy, pulled up from the junior varsity to be the other setter in a 6-2 offense, had 22 assists and nine digs.

“She did amazing tonight,” Curtis said of Hardy, who played a bit for the varsity team in a match last week at Lakeland. “She did a good job handling the pressure and running the court, and did a fabulous job on defense.”

Kylie Munday had 22 kills, 26 assists and 14 digs for Post Falls (9-1), which won the IEL and 5A Region 1 titles last year, and the 5A IEL in 2020. Trinity Byrne added 14 kills and two aces, Kaelyn Nagel 33 assists, Vanessa Kison 17 digs, Sam Anderson four blocks, Maddie Brazee three aces.

“We had a good block, and they had success tipping early,” Curtis said. “We really had to be mobile, and do a better job reading their hitters, and we started getting better as the match went on.”

Post Falls is home vs. Lewiston on Thursday. Coeur d’Alene plays host to Sandpoint on Friday.

“It wasn’t our best performance — we played flat across the board, but we served well, and that kept us alive,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “Allie Bowman did a great job from the service line, but also kept our defense alive.”

Ella Hosfeld had eight kills, three aces and 18 assists for Lake City (5-0, 2-0 IEL). Payton Peugh added 17 kills and four aces for the T-Wolves.

Kleinberg also praised the play of middle blocker Emberlyn Reynolds for her defense against University of Washington commit Katy Wessels.
