The Trojan Theatre Department production of "Arsenic and Old Lace" opens at 7 tonight at the Post Falls High School auditorium.
"Arsenic and Old Lace" is a dark comedy written in 1939 by by American playwright Joseph Kesselring.
Protagonist Mortimer Brewster, a writer and well-known theater critic, falls for girl-next-door Elaine Harper. After an intimate moment on Halloween, the betrothed return to their respective family homes to deliver the news. After delivering the news to his sweet aunts, Abby and Martha, Mortimer finds a corpse hidden in their window seat. He begins to unravel while rushing to tell the aunts before they stumble upon the body themselves, only to learn the two old women aren’t just aware of the dead man in their parlor — they killed him!
Between his eccentric aunts, a disturbed uncle and two brothers — one homicidal and the other intellectually disabled — Mortimer starts to realize his family is even crazier than he ever could have imagined.
The audience will be entertained as the Brewster clan and its close-knit community dance around elderberry wine while Mortimer comes to grips with the fact that he may not be able to escape the Brewster family curse himself.
