TWIN FALLS — Timberlake coach Steve Michael told his team at the start of the season that it could have something special.

So, the Tigers saved the special for Thursday afternoon.

Timberlake, seeded eighth in the state 3A girls soccer tournament, held off top-seeded Coeur d’Alene Charter 4-3 in two overtimes at the Sunway Soccer Complex.

Charter’s last loss to Timberlake was on Aug. 23, 2016. Charter beat Timberlake three times this season, including a 4-0 win over the Tigers last Saturday in the District 1-2 championship match at The Fields in Post Falls.

“We’ve been telling the girls, even after losing twice and playing in districts, that there’s something special about this team,” Michael said. “We’d maybe tied them once (also in 2016), but it’s just been something we haven’t been able to do. But the girls played with a lot of heart and some stuff the girls haven’t played with all year. Mentally, the girls just showed up. We played with some good possession and took our time.”

Sophomore Lucy Simpson recorded a hat trick for Timberlake (13-6-1), which faces defending champion Fruitland (14-2-1) in a semifinal game today. Coeur d’Alene Charter (18-1-0) faces Teton (10-5-2) in a loser-out match.

Charter’s Cadence Wilson scored in the 75th minute to tie the game, eventually sending the match to overtime.

Michael credits his assistant coach — and daughter — Sierra Kjos — with putting the Tigers in position for the win.

“We were really gassed at the end of regulation time,” Michael said. “Charter was able to climb back in and that was a momentum changer. Coach Kjos, she’s just amazing and challenged our ladies and they responded.”

Timberlake senior Charley Hegstad scored the game-winner in the 93rd minute.

“It was just an amazing shot by Charley,” Michael said. “I don’t care who the keeper was. She wasn’t going to get that one.”

AMMON — When rivals collide for a fourth time, there’s no secrets anymore.

Just who wants it more.

On this day, it was the Timberwolves.

Lake City junior midfielder Connor Jump scored in the 13th minute of a win over the fourth seeded Vikings in the state 5A opener at Hillcrest High.

“Connor put us on the board early in the game and then we clamped down on their attacking players,” Lake City coach Kevin Jump said. “This was the best Coeur d’Alene High team that I’ve seen in five years, and they made us earn it today. We’ve had back-and-forth battles with them this season, and we just wanted it more today.”

Lake City (11-4-1) faces defending champion and top seed Timberline (18-0-2) in the semifinals today. Coeur d’Alene (10-2-2) faces Madison (8-11–0) in a loser-out match.

Coeur d’Alene beat Lake City 1-0 in the Region 1 championship match on Oct. 12 at Coeur d’Alene High. Lake City handed Coeur d’Alene its only loss during the regular season 4-1 on Aug. 27 at Lake City High.

“We made some tactical adjustments in our past two games to minimize (Coeur d’Alene leading scorer) Cooper Prohaska,” Kevin Jump said. “Cooper is arguably the best soccer player in the state and our guys know everything goes through him. We wanted to minimize his touches and force Coeur d’Alene’s other players to beat us. It was risky for us because Coeur d’Alene has many talented players, but the gamble paid off.”

First half — 1, LC, Connor Jump (unassisted), 13:00. Second half — none.

Shots on goal — LC 7, Cd’A 12.

Saves — LC, Benji Deming 7; Cd’A, Dylan Jones 4.

IDAHO FALLS — Senior forward Elliotte Kortus had two goals and an assist for the top seeded Timberwolves in an opening round win over the eighth seeded Titans of Idaho Falls in the opening round of the state 5A tournament at Bonneville High.

Kortus’ goal on an assist from senior Delaney Moczan in the 30th minute gave Lake City the lead for good.

“It was a long day for us,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “We came out a little tight, and that’s my fault. We played well in big spurts of the day and had others when we weren’t ourselves. We had to play through the struggles and did a good job of that today. In the moments we struggled, we just had to find a way.”

Lake City (16-0-0) faces Centennial (11-5-3) in a semifinal match today. Centennial, which beat Coeur d’Alene in a play-in match last Saturday, upset fourth seeded Eagle 1-0 in its opener.

“Centennial counter attacks really well and we’ll have to account for that,” Ruchti said. “They’re a little more savvy on the ball than Thunder Ridge and we’ll have to be more organized, but we’ll play hard and see what happens.”

Moczan had a goal and two assists for Lake City.

Thunder Ridge (12-5-4) plays Eagle (14-4-1) in a loser out game.

First half — 1, LC, Georgia Whitehead (Elliotte Kortus), 7:00. 2, TR, Marisol Stosich (unassisted), 10:00. 3, LC, Kortus (Delaney Moczan), 30:00. Second half — 4, LC, Kortus (Moczan), 43:00. 5, LC, Moczan (Whitehead), 46:00. 6, TR, Stosich (unassisted), 72:00.

Shots on goal — TR 7, LC 19.
