COEUR d'ALENE — Derrick Booth — an alumnus and former wrestler at both North Idaho College and Post Falls High — has been named North Idaho College’s new interim head wrestling coach.

Booth officially began his coaching duties Monday.

“We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Derrick’s character and values to lead our program in the interim,” NIC athletic director Shawn Noël said. “He understands what it is to be a Cardinal and how important this program is to our community. We will continue to keep our wrestling program nationally prominent and build on the great tradition and foundation that was left by our alumni.”

Booth grew up in Post Falls and wrestled throughout his youth. After graduating from Post Falls High, Booth went on to North Idaho College where he became an All-American at 174 pounds for the Cardinals while completing his associate degree in general studies.

He then transferred to Division II Coker University in Hartsville, S.C., where he was a two-year starter and an all-conference selection for the Cobras. Booth graduated from Coker with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and exercise science.

After graduating, Booth coached at Darlington High in Darlington, S.C.; Central Valley High in Spokane Valley; and Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa. As Ellsworth’s assistant coach, Booth coached multiple All-Americans and helped improve the team national finish from 26th place in 2021 to 10th place in 2022.

“I am very excited to be a Cardinal once again,” Booth said. “I love this community, this campus and this program. I look forward to opportunity to help these young men achieve their goals.”

Booth recently graduated with a master’s degree in sport and athletic administration from Gonzaga University.

Booth will serve as NIC’s interim head wrestling coach through the 2022-23 season. Noël said NIC plans to begin the search for a permanent head wrestling coach in mid-February.
