John Michael Shaffer, 61

| October 2, 2022 1:00 AM

No matter how much time we are given, there is never enough to prepare for the loss of a loved one, especially for a pillar of the community like John Michael Shaffer. John, age 61, of Athol passed away on Sept. 21, 2022, after an arduous battle against cancer.

There are not enough words to encapsulate the full scope of who John was, but the roles he played in his lifetime were vast. He was a rock star musician who shredded guitar all over the country touring with his band.

He was a mentor and leader, who coached an array of sports for nearly a decade, and then continued his involvement in the school district long after, serving eight years on the school board, along with announcing countless football and basketball games for the last several years.

John was passionate in his beliefs on second chances, and would be the first to rise to the occasion of supporting others. He would be one’s greatest advocate and friend, never shying away from helping those in need, no matter how big or small the request. He would do so with a smile, and always had an absurd joke in his back pocket, ready for a laugh.

He was many things outside of these, too; a businessman, teacher, creator and innovator, an athlete, a jokester, and avid golfer. But of all these hats, the most important ones he wore were those of a devoted husband, loving father, son, brother, and friend.

John is survived by the love of his life and wife of thirty-four years, Adrienne; daughter, Brittni; son, Tyler, and his wife, Russia; son, Jackson; sister, Kim; and mother, Patricia.

Services will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, starting 2 p.m. at Lake City Church. All who knew him are welcome to attend. He thrived on connecting with people and creating a community, and would be overjoyed to see the vast amount of people he impacted take part in his celebration.
