Idaho has earned recognition from the U.S. Marshals Service.

U.S. Marshals Service Director Ronald L. Davis on Oct. 28 announced the recipients of the 41st Director’s Honorary Awards. The director selected the District of Idaho as the Small District of the Year, from a group of 33 districts, including the districts of Middle Tennessee, Northern Oklahoma, Maine, Delaware and Southern Illinois.

The U.S. Marshals Service District of Idaho encompasses the entirety of Idaho, consisting of 44 counties spread across 83,569 square miles. Geographically, Idaho is the 14th largest state in the U.S.

"Every day I observe the men and women of the District of Idaho working very hard to complete the missions of the Marshals Service," U.S. Marshal Brent Bunn said. "They work long hours and are put in dangerous situations to get the job done. I am excited the director has chosen to recognize their work and dedication by honoring them with the Director’s Small District of the Year Award. We can all be proud we have such great people serving the citizens of Idaho.”

The U.S. Marshals Service posts deputy U.S. marshals in Coeur d’Alene, Boise and Pocatello and staffs a task force office in Meridian.

The U.S. Marshals Service executes the orders of the U.S. District Court, District of Idaho, inclusive of executing federal arrest and seizure warrants. In addition to fugitive investigations, deputies conduct criminal investigations and present cases to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

Pursuant to the Adam Walsh Act of 2006, the majority of criminal investigations conducted by the deputies pertain to unregistered sex offenders who travel between states to avoid registration requirements. The U.S Marshals Service carries out judicial security for the circuit court of appeal, district and magistrate judges operating within Idaho.

On Jan. 18, representatives from the District of Idaho will attend the 41st Director’s Honorary Awards Ceremony in the Great Hall of the Robert F. Kennedy Main Justice Building in Washington, DC.
