STATE HIGH SCHOOL SWIM MEETS: 'It took the village' ... Lake City girls win second straight 5A team title

BOISE — It was out of necessity that Lake City’s Gabby Garasky found herself swimming in, and winning the 100-yard freestyle as a sophomore.
Back in her element, Garasky added titles in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke during the state 5A finals at the West Valley YMCA and Boise Aquatics Center on Saturday.
“During club season, the butterfly and backstroke are my main events,” Garasky said. “I train and work year-round on them. It was nice to be able to transition to that this year and work on them during the high school season.”
Garasky’s time of 56.24 seconds in the butterfly broke the state record.
“I was definitely focused on it after the prelims,” Garasky said. “I knew I was close, and today it just felt like the perfect race and I executed the way I wanted to.”
“Gabby’s just such a versatile athlete to go where we need and just perform,” Lake City coach Shelly Sobek said.
Lake City junior Steven Griffith nabbed his first state title, winning the 500 freestyle.
“I just knew I needed to be consistent,” Griffith said. “Whether it’s been showing up on time for practice or the way I train, I just wanted to keep doing the same thing I’d been doing. The finals, I felt kind of slow in the race and it didn’t feel like the greatest. But I trusted myself and my coaches and when I hit the wall, it felt pretty special.”
Lake City finished with 260 points to run away with a second straight girls title.
“We pulled together strong as a team,” Sobek said. “The girls really were willing to spread themselves into different events and be as strong as possible. It really took a village to put the points together.”
Lake City's boys, with only five competing in the meet, finished second with 111 points.
“They’re a small, but mighty group,” Sobek said. “They fought for every point they got. To be able to place with five shows they were committed. It was such a huge win for them.”
Coeur d'Alene's girls finished fourth with 111.5 points.
Boise won the boys team title with 375 points.
4A: The Sandpoint boys relay team of McCoy Jensen, Kale Wright, Lon LeBlanc and Caleb Norling won 200 freestyle relay in 1:35.18.
The Sandpoint girls finished third, the boys fifth.
Skyview of Nampa swept team titles.
