NIC PROPERTY PURCHASES: Doesn’t seem right

| November 6, 2022 4:00 AM

I have read a lot about NIC purchasing properties lately. I also read the fuzzy justification that somebody someday may need housing and that NIC needs room to grow. But when I read Idaho law, these purchases are probably not valid.

Section 33-2107 (3) allows NIC trustees to purchase real property, but that section mandates it be done “in the manner prescribed for trustees” at Idaho code section 33-601. That section 33-601 requires that real property purchases be “necessary for the operation of the school district.”

I don’t think the purchase of the Fort Ground Grill was necessary for the operation of NIC. I also see no reason why NIC is acquiring half the properties on Military Drive. NIC appears to be operating just fine without these properties, and they don’t seem necessary at all. I think the NIC land barons should stop these unnecessary purchases and quit breaking the law.

I wish the Coeur d’Alene Press reporters would look in to the validity of these purchases. Something doesn’t seem right here.
