70 again!

COEUR d’ALENE — For the first time in 233 days, Coeur d’Alene broke 70 degrees on Thursday.

At 3:20 p.m., it hit a high of 74.

“We made it. That’s a long time to go without a 70-degree day,” said Climatologist Cliff Harris.

He said the streak of sub-70-degree days broke the previous mark of 216 days that stretched from the fall of 1949 to the spring of 1950.

People welcomed the change from windy, wet conditions that saw a record 10.1 inches of snow in April and took advantage of sunny, blue skies.

Many were wearing shorts, showing off some stark white legs. Others were biking, hanging out at McEuen Park and kids were even playing at City Beach, although staying out of the 46-degree water.

But the one-day heatwave won’t last.

Memorial Day weekend is projected to be rainy and chilly. Monday will see highs near 60, with clouds and some showers.

“It’s going back down for the rest of the month,” Harris said.

Even early June looks cold, with temperatures expected to be in the low 50s and 60s, before 70s and sunshine should become a regular thing again.

Harris, who correctly predicted a cold, wet spring, is calling for a cooler summer, too.

“As far as summer goes, it won’t be nearly as hot as last year," he said, referring to a string of 100-degree days in late June. “Not even close.”
