STATE HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL TOURNAMENTS: Sandpoint wins consolation title in 4A
BOISE — After a tough 10-0 loss to Bishop Kelly to open the state 4A baseball tournament on Thursday, the Sandpoint Bulldogs won back-to-back games to win the consolation championship on Saturday at Bishop Kelly High.
The Bulldogs took down Pocatello in convincing fashion, 11-2.
“We were able to use our aggressive baserunning to our advantage,” Sandpoint coach Chase Tigert said. “We were able to force them into mistakes and (Jack) ZImmerman came in during the fifth and posted zeros the rest of the way.”
Sandpoint’s defense kept the Thunder at bay for most of the contest. Pocatello scored its only two runs in the first inning.
Sandpoint (13-12) had its biggest innings in the beginning and the end of the game. The Bulldogs quickly jumped on top of Pocatello (18-9) 6-0 in the top of the first.
They capped off their state run by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh.
Jack Ringer and Zimmerman shared pitching duties for Sandpoint, combining for eight strikeouts.
Sandpoint’s leadoff hitter, freshman Drew Lehman, went 3 for 4 with two doubles.
“Shortstop is one of the hardest positions to play in high school baseball, and he’s earned that position,” Tigert said. “He’s made some big plays during the tournament this year and I couldn’t be prouder of the kid.”
The Bulldogs’ two state tournament wins over the weekend were their first at state since winning the consolation title in 2007.
“This was a huge accomplishment,” Tigert said. “We’re starting to put Sandpoint baseball on the map and I hope the kids at the younger levels are seeing what we’re doing.”
