STATE TRACK AND FIELD: Work well worth it for Wood

| May 21, 2022 1:25 AM

BOISE — Once Post Falls High senior Sammie Wood started to believe she could be a state champion, she got to work.

Training, both physically and mentally, to get better.

On Friday, Wood was.

Wood won the state 5A girls 3,200-meter run, pulling away from fellow Trojan Annastasia Peters — a junior — for the title.

“It was really surreal,” Wood said. “It was really good to see all the hard work paying off in that last moment.”

Wood and Peters led the pack throughout the race, with Wood pulling away from Peters on the fifth lap, winning in 10 minutes, 39 seconds.

“Once I got there, all I could think about was being a state champion,” Wood said. “And it feels really cool. Every year, I’ve wanted to be a state champion, but things just didn’t come together. This year, it did and it felt awesome.”

Peters finished second in 10:51.

“It was a really good race,” Peters said. “To be able to push off of her for the last couple of laps really helped me. Having that, and that teammate to do that with, I’m going to miss.”

“It really opens a lot of doors for me,” Peters said. “Last year, I wouldn’t have thought that this could happen. But if you continue to work at it and work hard, anything is possible.”

Due to a computer error at the 5A/4A site, results were not made available on Friday.

Wood and Peters will also compete in the 800 and 1,600 later today with the hopes of adding another title.

In the 3A meet at Middleton High, Bonners Ferry sophomore Asha Abubakari won the shot put (38 feet 11 1/2 inches) and discus (120-2).

The meets conclude today.
