STATE HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL TOURNAMENTS: St. Maries falls in state 2A opener to Malad
NAMPA — Brock Anderson singled to score Dylan Larson in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 3-2 for St. Maries, which was unable to push across the tying run in a loss to the Malad Dragons in the opening round of the state 2A tournament at Nampa Christian High on Thursday.
St. Maries (7-12) faces Challis-Mackay (10-10) in a loser-out game today at 11 a.m.
Lumberjack pitcher Trace Wicks struck out six over six innings, allowing four hits.
Malad took the lead after a leadoff walk to Gaiden Combs, followed by singles by Vincent Evans, Brady Showell and Braylen Tripp to take a 3-0 lead. Evans’ single in the bottom of the second was the only other hit of the game for Malad (13-6), which faces Nampa Christian (26-2) in a semifinal game tonight at 4 p.m. Nampa Christian beat Challis-Mackay 7-0 in its opener.

BOISE — Colin Dempsey and Cooper Cammann combined for a five-inning no-hitter as the host and second-seeded Knights, the defending state 4A champions, beat the 7-seed Bulldogs in a first-round game at Bishop Kelly High.
Sandpoint (11-12) will play No. 6 Bonneville (18-10) of Idaho Falls today at noon PDT in a loser-out game.
Junior Colin Roos allowed two runs on five hits in four innings, striking out seven for teh Bulldogs. But BK scored eight runs in the fifth off two Sandpoint relievers to end the game on the 10-run rule.

NAMPA — The eighth-seeded Badgers mustered just four hits in a loss to the Eagles in the first round of the state 3A tournament at Northwest Nazarene University.
Bonners Ferry (13-12), the District 1 champion which went two-and-out last year, take on Snake River (16-9) today at 9 a.m. PDT in a consolation-round game. Snake River lost 6-5 to Sugar-Salem in its opener.
Karter Howell drove in four runs for Marsh Valley (20-3), including a two-run single in the second inning and a two-run double in the third.
The Eagles, last year’s consolation champions, face Sugar-Salem (18-9) today in a semifinal game.
