ELECTION: Regrets over ‘circus’

| May 20, 2022 1:00 AM

I’m a Council Member at a Church in Rathdrum that hosts a polling place, though I do not speak for that Church here. I mention this only because our Council meeting landed on election night, so I had to drive through the circus that was taking place in our driveway.

The KCRCC had representatives posted on the bike path flanking the driveway, passing out “Voter Guides.” That caused a backup and a traffic hazard on the highway. It also makes it appear that the Church supports those candidates. It does not support any candidate or party.

Though I’m a lifelong Republican and did vote about 90% in line with those recommendations, I am disappointed with the electioneering that was taking place there. Both because it was too close to the poll, though I think in accordance with the law and because it happened at my Church. That’s not where I go to get politicked.

The Church hosts the polling place in an effort to support the community and many members strongly believe that we should do that. I was, in fact, the Trustee who approved their use of the facility years ago. An error. I’m no longer in that position but I’m on the Council and have a vote.

Should I have the opportunity to do so, I will vote to tell the Elections Department to find another location in order to make the circus go away. That is not the consensus of the Council, it is my own desire.
