Silver Angels Poker Run is May 21
Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines.
The fourth annual Silver Angels for the Elderly Classic Car Poker Run is Saturday, May 21.
The fun begins at 2 p.m. at the Hayden Eagles, 1600 W. Wyoming Ave., where sweet rides will line up for a cruise to area senior living facilities including Bestland of Coeur d'Alene and North Star Retirement Community.
Already signed up are a 1970 Plymouth Cuda, 426; a 1969 Jaguar E type; a 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle; and a 1962 Chevrolet Corvette.
“The biggest reason we do it is because we want the residents to see the cars from their youths and to share stories with the drivers," Silver Angels founder Diane Zell said Friday. "Secondly, we’re raising funds for the ongoing ministry of providing personalized birthday gifts for residents at the facilities, which we’ve done for the past three years."
The nonprofit also provides gifts and parties for senior community residents throughout the year.
"We celebrate almost all holidays with cards and gifts," Zell said. "On Mother’s Day we gave 64 women at two facilities cards, cookies and corsages. We’re looking for more ways to celebrate the residents' lives. Many don’t have visitors and feel forgotten. At Christmas time, caregivers and nurses get cards too."
A car show will begin at 3:30 p.m. and an after party featuring live music, line dancing and prizes will be at 5 p.m. after the cruise returns to the Hayden Eagles. The public is welcome.
"The place will be jumping," Zell said.
